William J Beavers was the oldest child of William H and Sarah Jane Deans Beavers. He grew up in Coweta County, Georgia where is is found with his family in the 1860 and 1870 census records. During his childhood, he no doubt witnessed some hard times. His own father and several uncles fought in the Civil War and there were Union raids in Coweta County during the war.

Soon after the 1870 census the Lyle family moved away from Coweta County. One can imagine that the then 20 year-old William must have already had some romantic interest in the young Mattie Lyle, because he subsequently traveled to Chattooga County to marry her on 2 Nov 1875.

The young farmer and his wife and family are again living back in Coweta County in the 1880 census. However, times must have continued hard and the family had moved to Polk County, Georgia by the 1900 census. Subsequently, the family moved to Haralson County, Georgia, where they are found in 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records.

I never had the privilege of knowing William J Beavers, my great-grandfather. However, I do know that he gave my mother (his granddaughter) an especially beloved doll, and I treasure that memory of him.
