Clellan John Porter, 94, of rural Chrisman, went home to the Lord at 7:02 a.m. Tuesday (April 14, 2009) at Pleasant Meadows Christian Village in Chrisman. He was a lifelong Chrisman area farmer.

Services celebrating his life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday (April 17, 2009) at Templeton Funeral Home in Paris. Burial will follow in Franklin Cemetery south of Chrisman. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.

Clellan was born March 16, 1915 in Edgar County, the son of the late John and Zelpha (Miller) Porter. He married Marcella Smith on March 16, 1939 in Covington, Ind., and she survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Neil (Betty) Porter, Tom Porter, and Phil (Debbie Jo) Porter, all of Chrisman; a brother, Harold Porter of Hillsdale, Ind.; ten grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Porter, four brothers, Kenneth, Kermit, George, and Wintford Porter, and four sisters, Gladys Bolen, Catherine Jenkins, Janie Bonwell, and Norma Jean Dailey.
Clellan was a lifelong farmer and Edgar County Farm Bureau member. He served on the Scottland School Board. He was also a member of the Anti-Theft Association and the Brouilletts Creek Cemetery Board. In his younger years he also worked as an ASC grain bin inspector and worked cleaning roadside ditches for the township. He lived his entire life within a six mile radius and banked at the same bank his entire life. He once commented that he would be buried within two miles of where he was born.

He loved farming, raising livestock, and cutting and splitting wood. He heated his home with wood until the past two winters. He loved baseball and played Legion ball until sustaining a knee injury sliding into home plate. He was always a St. Louis Cardinals fan, having had a chance to try out as a lefthanded pitcher but passing on the opportunity because he didn't want to leave home.

Clellan and Marcella recently celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary at Pleasant Meadows. They first met through mutual friends at a baseball game in which Clellan was playing. After a period of courtship and saving his dollar a day salary, he drove to Paris to purchase Marcella a ring at the cost of $11. During their recent celebration, Clellan surprised his bride with a new wedding ring.

For those who wish, the family suggests that memorials be made to Pleasant Meadows Christian Village, the American Cancer Society, or to the Edgar County Animal Shelter in care of Templeton Funeral Home, 600 E. Court St., Paris, IL 61944.
