Philemon lived in Fairfield County, Ohio, for his entire life. He and his brother Solomon purchased the first harvesting machine in their vicinity, known as the Curby. It was in the 1860s, and it was "hand rake platform style."

He was affiliated with the German Baptist Church.

He was called to military service in 1865. He went from Bremen, Ohio, to Zanesville, Ohio, where word was received that the war was over.

Philemon's father gave him 80 acres of the family homestead, with the stipulation that Philemon pay $1,000 to his father's heirs.

Philemon was the father of Levi (b. 1851); Alexander H. "Sander" (b. 1854); Franklin Pierce (b. 1858); Daniel S. (b. 1860); Chloe E. (b. 1862); Bentley K. (b. 1864); and Andrew J. (b. 1868).
