In 1912 George Newton Williams married Mrs. Bessie Box Jones, the widow of Aaron Jones and mother of two sons, Hurley D. and Charley B. Jones. She was the daughter of Charles Owen Box and his wife, Rena Jones Box, of the Big Creek Methodist Church community just over the Alabama line in present Houston County. George was elected County School Superintendent of Hale County.
in 1915 George and Bessie separated due to a dispute between Bessie and George's daughter from his first marriage, Mattie Lee Williams. George moved his first family to Shreveport, Louisiana, leaving Edwin LeGrand, Sr., his son by Bessie, with his parents in Graceville. After a few days with George's parents, Bessie picked up 18 month old Edwin and took him to Big Creek, Alabama where they lived with her parents.
