James M. Shields, who recently died very suddenly in this city, was one of the pioneers of Grant County. Mr. Shields was born in Jackson County, Georgia, January 21, 1831. At the breaking out of the Civil War he moved to Arkansas, and enlisted in Company A. of the Second Arkansas Infantry. Soon after the war he moved from that state direct to Long Creek, and to him, probably more than to any one else, is due the credit of redeeming Grant County from the wily savage, and peopling it with thrifty, industrious citizens. He left a wife and eight children, all of whom are among the leading citizens of the county. He was a devoted member of the M. E. Church.
