C. W. Roberts Succumbed After Long Illness

C. W. Roberts passed away at the home of his son, Wilbur Roberts, Wednesday, August 29, after a long illness.
Funeral services were held in the Rolfe Methodist Church Saturday at 2:30 p.m. following a short service for the family at the Streit Funeral Home. Rev. O.M. McQuary officiated.
A quartet composed of Karen Truelson, Katheryn Majorowicz, Richard Lehnus and Loell Diggs, sang ‘The Old Rugged Cross' and ‘Beyond The Sunset' with Mrs. L. C. Olney at the organ.
Mrs. Earl Young and Mrs. Dorothy Farlow cared for the flowers.
Casket bearers were Keith Haynes, A. L. Firkins, Harry Knisley, Verne Jarvis, Marvin Turley and Wesley Lehnus, all members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge. Burial was in Powhatan cemetery.
Charles W. Roberts was born near Manchester, Ind., May 19, 1862 and passed away August 29, 1956 at the age of 94 years, three months and 10 days. He was the oldest citizen in Rolfe at the time of his passing.
He moved with his parents, William and Henrietta Roberts, to Warren County, Ia., on August 10, 1870. He grew to manhood and joined the Methodist Church in his teens at Spring Hill, Ia.
He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Burris on September 27, 1887. To this union six children were born, Emmet H., Wilbur H., Virgil E., Mabel, Alfred and Lucy. Mabel and Alfred died in infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Roberts with their children moved to Pocahontas County in the spring of 1901 and settled on a farm near Plover. It was there his wife died on January 21, 1918.
He was superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School at Plover for several years and was an active member of the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges. He was a 50 year member of the I.O.O.F. Mr. Roberts came to Rolfe about 20 years ago and was custodian of the Methodist Church here as long as he was able.
Survivors include three sons, Emmet of Deer Creek, Minn., Wilbur of Rolfe, Virgil of Eugene, Ore., and one daughter, Lucy Firkins of Rolfe, 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Roberts, Mrs. Myrl Crouse and Warren Roberts, all of Deer Creek, Minn., Virgil Roberts of Eugene, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Orville Egge and family and Darwin Roberts of Windom, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Kindler and family of Lamberton, Minn., Jack Roberts of St. Paul, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Everett Roberts and family of Ida Grove and Mr. and Mrs. Willard Otto and family of Laurens. Relatives were also present from Des Moines, Mason City, Sioux Rapids, Iowa city, Graettinger, Emmetsburg and Mallard."
