The son of John & Mary Jane (Ebert) Baughman, he married Elizabeth Kerchner and fathered the children you see linked below. In 1860, he was a carpenter living with his wife in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-six in Harrisburg February 22, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 3 as a private with the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. K, and honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1865. He is in the company register and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "P. S. Baughman."

John Baughman, who was removed to the Insane Asylum at Harrisburg last Summer, died at that institution last Friday. His remains were brought to his late residence in this place, (Marysville) Saturday noon. HIs burial will take place tomorrow.
John was a veteran of the Civil War.

John S. Baughman, of Marysville, formerly of New Buffalo, well known to many people here abouts died in the insane asylum at Harrisburg, on Friday the 11th. He was a member of Co. K, 83rd, Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and Marysville [Geib] Post G.A.R. [No. 188].

He leaves a wife and five children. His health had been failing for about four years, and was nearly a year in the asylum. Funeral at Marysville, on Tuesday, Age about 48 years.
