Nancy Ann Wiseman was born June 29, 1850 in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri to William and Sarah Hale Anderson Wiseman.

Nancy Ann met her husband through two of her brothers, taht served with him in Union Army Volunteers, 14th Regiment, Kansas Cavalary. Nancy was a half blood Cherokee and when Wilson proposed marriage to Nancy, now an orphan, her guardians refused to give their consent because Nancy was barely 16 years old and marriage, at such a young age, was contrary to Cherokee custom. So it was agreed that Wilson would leave and not see Nancy for one year and if, at the end of that year, the couple still felt the same about each other, they would be allowed to marry.

On August 1, 1867 Wilson Jasper Medlen, age 28 and Nancy Ann Wiseman, age 17, both of Crawford County, Kansas, took out a marriage license at Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas. Judge Buck married them the same day and the marriage lasted fifty years, producing nine children, Clarise Jane, Louis, Henry Harrison, Etta Sarah, Mary Ellen, Florence Ann, Grace Bell, Bertha, and Joseph Emmett Medlen.

Wilson and Nancy moved to Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation (Oklahoma) in 1885 settling in the St Louis Settlement, WNE of what is now known as Copan, Washington County, Oklahoma. The last child born to them, Joseph Emmett, was born here. Nancy Ann was called "Shan" (pronounced Shawn/Sean) meaning grandmother in the Irish/Scot/Celtic language.

Nancy Ann (Wiseman) Medlen, 67, died February 21, 1917 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas. Her husband, Wilson, 88, died on January 21, 1924. Funeral services were held and burial was in Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney, Montgomery County, Kansas, along side her husband, and many other family members.
