Emma Bolln Warren was my grandmother, but I never met her because she died 2 years before I was born. However, I do have stories from her descendants.

Her son, my dad, William Edward Warren wrote: "She was a good child and caused a minimum of trouble to her parents. When quite young, she enjoyed following her father around the ranch tending to the livestock. She had a gentle nature and the animals seemed to sense this quality. She learned to milk cows and feed the calves at a very tender age. Emma and Fritz [her brother] started school in Cheyenne in 1902. Emma was seven and could speak little English when she began grade school. Before that, her mother sent her to German school. Of course, Emma’s classmates enjoyed making her life as miserable as possible. Emma, being of a gentle nature, withdrew rather than fought. She did, however, make good progress in school and rapidly mastered the English language. After WWII, she was not permitted to speak German at home.

Emma was a steady, dependable source of labor to her father. She loved working on the ranch and she never complained. She completed her high school education and took a short course at a business school. She was a serious girl and an advocate of the work ethic. Because of her serious and somewhat austere nature, she didn’t attract boys in droves. Emma was, however, an attractive girl with blond hair and pretty blue eyes. Her figure was trim and she was of average height. Probably her most attractive feature was her smile which gave a glow to her presence.

My dad said that Emma and Harry eloped in Grand Island, Nebraska. Harry was a laborer on the Bolln ranch.

My mother, Emma's daughter-in-law, Mary Olive Netherton Warren, said: "Grandma Emma was blonde and had a beautiful smile. She was very hard working. She never lost her temper. After her marriage, Harry drank a lot. However, Emma never showed her unhappiness. She always had a smile on her face and she never had a bad word about anyone."

Harry and Emma, with the Bolln support, started a dairy farm outside of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Eventually after 14-16 hour days, they began to get ahead. In the meantime, they had two children, William or "Billy" and Norma. Emma's nephew, John Von Kennel, told me that Emma was a "flat workaholic" and milked the cows by hand. She was different from her sisters.

For entertainment, Emma and her mother Cecilia, went to "Bank Night, drawing tickets for prizes, and the movies at the Lincoln Theatre when Harry was at the Elks Club,

Emma died of breast cancer at the age of 51.
