A Well Known Man Dies In Hospital

Joseph L. Harrell, 92, well known retired Shelby county farmer and a resident of Smithland, died at 9:15 p.m. Friday at the Major Hospital. He was taken to the hospital last Saturday, following a heart attack and death came from a complication of diseases.
Mr. Harrell, born June 25, 1856, in Shelby Township, was the son of James Ellison and Edith (McCarty) Harrell. In August, 1880, he was married to Henrietta Cox, of Bartholomew County, and nine children were born to this union. He was the last living member of a family of 10 children.
Mr. Harrell's wife, who died in May 1925, and three children preceded him in death. He was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Lewis Creek.
The six children who survive him are: Marion, Charles and Virgil Harrell of Washington township; Stephen Harrell of Shelbyville; Mrs. Clara Clayton of Smithland of Smithland, and Mrs. Vernie Johnson of Muskegon, Michigan. Twenty-eight grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Gilead Baptist church at Smithland Monday at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. James Pickett and Rev. Robert Caveness officiating. Burial in charge of the Murphy Mortuary will be in the Miller cemetery in Hendricks Township.
