A Chrysler sedan owned by W. P. Hancock of Bassett, Va. and driven by a twelve-year-old nephew, skidded from the highway Wednesday evening on Route 311, half mile from the Log Cabin Barbeque, south of the city, and tuned over, fatally injuring Walter Jarrett, cafe operator at Bassett. Jarrett suffering with a broken neck, died as a passerby rushed him to the local hospital.
Jarrett is survived by his wife and several children.
He had made his home at Bassett for a number of years.

Funeral services for Walter Jarrett, age 48, were held Friday afternoon, May 13th, in Old Blackberry Church.
Mr. Jarrett was killed in an automobile accident last Wednesday afternoon on River Road, south of Martinsville. He has been a life-long resident of Bassett, Va..
Flower bearers were composed of the nieces, nephews and cousins of the deceased.
They were Misses Maggie Stone, Helen Stone, Sallie Willie Jarrett, Rosa Jarrett, Nancy Jarrett.
Mesdames M. L. Mays, Harry Jarrett, G. E. Hiatt, Jack Vermillion, Edward Davis, Onis Franklin, Lucy Petanksey, J. A. Harris, John Holland.
Messrs. Harry Jarrett, Peter Jarrett, George Mason, Marshall Jarrett, Horace Jarrett, Horace Mason, Arthur Jarrett, Leonard Stone and Edwin Stone.
Those attending the funeral and burial from other counties and cities were J. B. Jarrett and daughter, Mrs. J. A. Harris of McDowell, W. Va., Mrs. Jack Vermillion, Covington, Va., J. D. Jarrett and Daughter, Mrs. Lucy Petanksey of Salem, Va., F. W. Jarrett, Roanoke; Mrs. John Holland, Roanoke; George Mason, Roanoke; Horace Mason, Roanoke; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jarrett, Graham, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Prillaman., Ashland, W. Va.; Mrs. Susie Jones, Henry; Gordon Franklin, Spray, N.C.; Mrs. W. L. Stone, Henry; Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Cummings and children, Madison, N.C.
Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Sallie Bettie Prillaman Jarrett and six children: Crockett, Ross, Frank, Russell and Adam Jarrett and Mrs. Albert Haynes.
Also the aged father, W. H. Jarrett of Bassett, Va. and five brothers and five sisters as follows: Jesse and Brown Jarrett and Mrs. Lucy Fretwell of Basset; Wheeler Jarrett, Stanleytown; Mrs. W. S. Stone, Henry; S. L. Jarrett, Fieldale, Va., Mrs. G. B. Cummings, Madison, N.C.; Mrs. Lee Stone and B. M. Jarrett, Martinsville, and Mrs. S. A. Pardue, Gainesville, Fla.
