Orrian "Shorty" Billings, 88, of Odessa, died Friday, June 20, 2008, in Odessa. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2008, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring with Ralph Anderson, minister of Birdwell Lane Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.


She was born to A.C. and Willie Mae Kitchens Billings on May 16, 1920, in Dereks, Ark., and moved to West Texas in 1921. She lived in Big Spring until 1940, when she moved to California to work in an aircraft factory. She was an original "Rosie the Riveter." After the war, she returned to Arkansas to live with her parents. She came to Big Spring in 1960 and pursued her teaching career at Elbow Elementary. She then taught with Forsan Independent School District for 24 years and retired with 30 years of teaching service. After retiring, she worked at Denny's for six years and then for Wal-Mart for seven years. She moved to Odessa in 2002 and loved gardening. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Asa and Donna Reefschneider of Odessa; a brother, A.C. Billings Jr. and wife Ann of Mena, Ark.; two grandchildren, Amanda Neal and husband Shane and Asa Clint Reefschneider, all of Odessa; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Oval Bedwell, Lonus Armstrong, Joyce Armstrong and Beauna McGregor; and one brother, Avon Billings.
