Arthur Mays was the son of Eula Mims from Alabama and Enoch Grigsby Mays Jr. from Florida. His father died in 1898 when he was eight years old. His family moved from Bell County to Hico in Hamilton County before 1900. Arthur was committed by his mother to the State Insane Asylum in Austin when he was 15 years old in about 1905. He stayed in that hospital until 1963 when he was transferred to Kerrville State Hospital where he died in 1970. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He outlived all of them. There is no marker on his grave since the state of Texas does not defray that expense and no family member was left to do it. He is buried on the south side of the road near the bottom fence on the west side in the state hospital section of the cemetery.
