There are 600+ patients of the Utah Territorial Insane Asylum (now known as Utah State Hospital) buried in Provo City Cemetery, most in unmarked graves, given a pauper's burial, alone without recognition or ceremony, between 1885 and 1960. The Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project requested donations to construct this monument with individual plaques to honor each of these precious spirits. This beautiful obelisk stands in Block 5 with four USH monuments, Block 7 has four USH monuments, and Block 8 has two monuments (see under PHOTOS tab). Each monument holds an individual plaque for each patient buried in that block. The monument was completed and dedicated to each of them October 10, 2018, in Provo City Cemetery. Please see the link (above) for each of their Find a Grave memorials in the collection created to honor them.

NOTE: Originally, the monument was designed for 485 patients. To date, I've documented that there were 607; 122 precious individuals still need plaques.

Inscription

[Obelisk Tribute:]
IN MEMORY
OF THE INDIVIDUALS
WHO DIED WHILE
PATIENTS AT THE
UTAH STATE HOSPITAL
1885 - 1960

[reverse side]
IN HONOR OF THE FORGOTTEN
MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN
WHOSE COURAGEOUS AND LONELY
BATTLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS
WAS NEVER RECOGNIZED IN LIFE.
THEIR STRUGGLES CAME IN AN
ERA WHEN HOPE FOR RECOVERY
WAS NEVER SPOKEN. DEATH
UNDOUBTEDLY BROUGHT THEM
FREEDOM FROM THEIR MORTAL
PAIN. SO BE IT OUR DUTY TO
REMEDY THE TRAGEDY OF THEIR
FORGOTTEN LIVES AND REMEMBER
THEM AS INDIVITUALS PURSUING
THEIR DREAMS WHILE SEEKING A
LIFE OF HAPPINESS AND JOY
AMIDST THE DARKNESS OF THEIR
TRIALS. THAT WE NEVER REPEAT
THE PAST, THEIR VOICES WOULD
ADMONISH US TO ACKNOWLEDGE
THOSE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS
TODAY AND BRING A MESSAGE OF
HOPE, PEACE AND ACCEPTANCE.
