Matilda F. Cadmus was the youngest daughter of John Kip Cadmus, of Belleville, New Jersey, and his wife Hannah J. (Paret) Cadmus. Their family lived in the Ninth Ward of Manhattan, where on Christmas Day 1853, Matilda married John Newton Gesner. John and Matilda had just one child, Angeline "Lina" Estelle Gesner, before the marriage broke up. Matilda was left to support herself, which she did by sewing. Her name appeared in the New York city directory in 1855 and 1857 as a "vest maker." Sadly, Matilda died at age 32 of "laryngitis." Her daughter Lina was consequently raised by her sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Samuel D. Corson.

Eventually Lina Gesner married her first cousin George Washington Cole, son of Matilda's sister Hannah Maria (Cadmus) Cole. Matilda is buried with George and Lina's first child, little Angeline Estelle "Essie" Cole, who died at the age of three.
