Musician, Singer, Songwriter. Known as Canada's greatest songwriter, he achieved international acclaim with his folk and country music songwriting in the 1960s and 1970s. Some of his most popular hits were: "Black Day in July," "Early Morning Rain," "Canadian Railroad Trilogy," "If You Could Read My Mind," "Carefree Highway," "Sundown," "Cold on the Shoulder," "Rainy Day People" and his most recognized song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," which told the story of the ship sinking in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975 during a late fall storm where all 29 crew members perished. Lightfoot achieved great success, with multiple albums going gold and a few going multi-platinum. In 1986, he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In 2003, he was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2012, Lightfoot was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was revered by many Canadians as a natural treasure. Lightfoot was married three times and had six children. In early 2023, Lightfoot's health began to decline, and he had to cancel many concerts. He died from natural causes on May 1, 2023, while in hospital care in North York, Toronto.
