He was born in Sandy, Utah on April 6, 1917 to John Leroy and Sigrid Johnson McGhie, the oldest son of 10 children. He graduated from South High School ('33), attended the University of Utah and served in the Pacific Theatre with the Navy during World War II. He married Blanche Murphy in 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple and raised their family in Palo Alto, California.

He received a BA ('47), and MBA ('53) from Stanford University, worked with Varian Associates, was the first employee for the Stanford Electronics Research Laboratory, and was Assoc. Most notably he and Blanche served as the first ambassadors for the LDS Church in Nairobi, Kenya in 1980, and later directed the Family to Family Book of Mormon project. They were also docents at the Church Museum of History and Art for over 20 years, missionaries in Palo Alto and for the Salt Lake Liberty Stake, in the International Mission Presidency and temple workers in Oakland.

Farrell was also a Salt Lake Temple worker and served in the Palo Alto Ward bishopric. He loved golf, fishing, sports, statistics and musical productions, but most of all he loved Blanche.

He was very proud of children Dennis (Lee/Portland), Joanne (David/Oakley) and David (Leslie/Sacramento), plus grand-children, Jake, Sam, Ben, Drew, Erica and Patrick, and great-grand-children Raegan and Logan.
