Norris P. Newton, aged 8I years. died, today at 1:15 o'clock at his home in Philomath. Old age and a cancerous tumor caused him difficulty for some time and finally resulted In his death. Mr. Newton was a pioneer of Benton county, having come here while yet in his teens. Four sons and two daughters and the widow in Philomath survive him. The living brothers are O. G. Newton of Philomath, Jasper Newton of Washington; sisters-Mrs. Wm. Bohannon and Mrs. Cynthia Johnson of Corvallis, and Mrs. Keziah Rayburn of Philomath. Mr. Newton' was a man well known and highly esteemed. He was a Mason and an Odd Fellow and In earlier life was active In all public affairs.

PHILOMATH, Ore.
Norris P. Newton, 81 years old, an Oregon pioneer of 1848, whose death has just occurred, was born in Licking County, Ohio. April 18, 1830, and crossed the plains with his parents in 1848. After a short stay in Iowa he settled in Benton County, which was his home continuously. He married Justine Knott September 8, 1853. She and six children survive him. The children are: Mrs. Cynthia E. Henkle, Abithar Newton and Walter H. Newton of Philomath; Harvey C. Newton and Ernest P. Newton of South Bend, Wash, and Mrs. Laura Haines of Forest Grove, Ore.
