J.D. McCormick Rites Are Today

Roby - Funeral for J.D. McCormick, Sr., 89, retired farmer, was to be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church in Roby.

The Rev. Orvel Brantley, pastor, was to officiate, assisted by the Rev. Marshall Stewart, pastor of Hamlin Church of Christ.

Burial was to be in Roby Cemetery under direction of Weathersbee Funeral Home.

Mr. McCormick died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Hamlin Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 16, 1879 in Alexander City, Ala., he came to Fisher County in 1920 from Callahan County. He married Eunice Elizabeth Brooks in Whitesboro on July 9, 1905. She died July 8, 1967 in Roby.

He had been a member of the Baptist church since 1912, and was the last surviving charter member of El Paso Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Clifton of Sweetwater, J.D., Jr. of Roby, and Rev. Weldon McCormick of Midland; three daughters, Mrs. H.P. (Gladys) Elam of Roby, Mrs. Henry (Lorene) Liebfried of Garland, and Mrs. A.E. (Hazel) Lane of Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Anna Fuller of Alexander City, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Joe Lane, Cecil McCormick, Don McCormick, Chris McCormick, Kevin McCormick, and Ronnie McCormick, all grandsons.

Ancestry.com shows Joseph Daniel McCormick, Sr. is the son of Daniel Colin McCormick and Winnie Ann Duncan. Joseph Daniel McCormick, Sr. shows up in the 1900 census age 19 in Tallapoosa Co., AL, the son of Daniel C. and Winnie A. McCormick.

In the 1900 census, Fannie was Daniel Colin McCormick's sister, and census shows her a widow and no children with none living.

Three of Daniel Colin McCormick's children I have traced to this area in Texas:

(1) Joe McCormick who was reported born 16 Nov 1879 and was not on the 1880 census and showed birth as Sep 1880 on the 1900 census lived in Fisher County;

(2) Ada who married William J. Moore and reportedly died in Lubbock CO., TX.

(3) Charles Henry McCormick who died in Nolan Co., TX. [buried at Roby Cemetery, Roby, Texas]
