A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted with Co. G, 16th PA Infantry, serving st the rank of Private from April 25 to July 30, 1861. He next enlisted, again in York, with Co. B, 130th PA Infantry on August 7, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal on Januray 1, 1863 and honorably discharged May 21, 1863.
