John is the son of John & Ellenor (Denton) Campbell according to the book "War of 1812 Soldiers of Maury County, TN. by Jill K. Garrett. On page 24 he is listed as one of the 5 children of John Campbell, a war of 1812 soldier. After the death of his father before 9 September 1816 in Maury Co, TN his mother moved with most of her children to Hamilton Co. IL.
At the present time it is believed she was following her daughter, Mariah and her husband, Joseph Gill. From the book mentioned above it is believed that she did this to prevent the state of Tennessee from taking custody of her young children.
