MRS. SLATER IS CALLED--LIVED HERE 55 YEARS
Funeral to be Held Today--One of First Teachers In the City Schools
The whole community was saddened Monday afternoon by the death of Mrs. Charles Slater, who had been a resident of this county for fifty-five years.
Mrs. Slater was a woman of highest character, respected by all. Her life had been one of useful service in the community, the church and home. Always thoughtful of those around her she endeared herself to her neighbors and friends.
Mrs. Slater's maiden name was Matilda Whitehead. She was born in Wayne county, New York, January 26, 1855. She came to Michigan with her parents in 1869, who settled on a farm in Union township. She was united in marriage to Charles Slater, May 9, 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Slater came to Mt. Pleasant at that time and have resided here ever since then. For thirteen years they lived at the government Indian school where Mr. Slater was employed but moved back to their home on North Lansing last July.
Mrs. Slater had been in poor health for over a year.
Mrs. Slater joined the Methodist church when she was a young girl and transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church after her marriage. She was an active worker in the organizations of the church. She was one of the first teachers in the public schools of this city and taught here when the school had but two rooms.
The members of the family who survive her are the husband, Charles Slater; four daughters, Mrs. J. W. Zimmerman of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. M. J. Smith of Bay Port, Mich.; and Miss Ruth and Miss Mary Slater; a brother, Frank B. Whitehead of Harlingen, Texas; and two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Moss and Mrs. Susie Hoop of Union township.
The funeral services will be held today at 2:00 o'clock at the home. Reverend Green will give the funeral address.
