Funeral services for Melvin Luther Carter, 81, of 1804 St. John Street, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Coker-Mathews-Peters Chapel with Rev. Thomas Beall officiating. Burial will be in Memoryland Memorial Park.

He died Thursday in a local nursing home.

Pallbearers will be Albert Carter, Donald Carter, Bill Carter, Ramond Carter, and Mutt Carter.

He was born Sept. 26, 1897, in Hunt County. His parents were Joe Carter and Myrtle Bridges. He married Ida Mae Cook on June 24, 1935, in Alvarado. Carter was a retired employee of Santa Fe Railroad and a member of the North Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ida Mae Carter; one son, Melvin Carter of Porterville, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Howard of Greenville and Mrs. Lovita Walsh of Garland; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Ross of Denison; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Coker-Mathews-Peters Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
