Attorney, Diplomat. His family moved to Utica, New York, where he attended local schools. He graduated from Yale in 1887, attended Harvard Law School, and then became private secretary to US Senator William B. Allison of Iowa. He was admitted to the bar in 1889, practiced law in New York City, and was a member of several corporate boards of directors. He served in the New York Assembly in 1894, and was President of the Board of Fire Commissioners from 1895 to 1898. He was US Ambassador to Mexico from 1924 to 1927, and Special Ambassador to Venezuela for the dedication of a statue of Henry Clay in 1930.
