Dan was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and was the son of the late Danforth Joy Coonradt Sr. and Anna Marie Nielsen. He was the fourth of five children.
Dan married Arminta "Peggy" Manwill on March 23, 1928 in Salt Lake City. She died in 1974. They had five children: Dan, Barbara, George, Leo, and Gene. He later married Cordelia "Tiny" Tonge Roberts. He resided at 1043 South Jefferson Street (220 West) in the Downtown district of Salt Lake City, Utah at the time of his death.
Dan passed away in Salt Lake City and was interred in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in East Millcreek.
