He served with Company A of the 13th Virginia Cavalry and Company K of the 68th North Carolina Infantry in the Confederate States Army. Post-bellum, he belonged to the Beaver Dam Chapter, Confederate Veterans. He was from Hertford, North Carolina, and went to Murfreesboro to join the 68th. He was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church. He was Franklin's eldest citizen at the time of his passing.
