Leah was my 2nd cousin through her father, Charles "D" Miner.
Leah was born April 16, 1921 in Salem, Utah to Charles D. and Elmina Johnson Miner. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). Trained at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, she served at Randolph Field, Texas where she attained the rank of Sergeant and wired circuits on IBM machines.

After the war, Leah married her college sweetheart, D. Morris Shapiro on November 22, 1946. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They worked together for more than 50 years to overcome the many obstacles that came into their lives. They successfully instilled in their nine children a love of the gospel and of learning, resulting in six serving full-time missions, seven graduating from college, and all nine being sealed in the temple. Over the years, Leah served in many positions in the LDS Church, particularly enjoying her many years as Guide Patrol (11-year-old scouts) Leader where she started many boys on the road to Eagle Scout. She also served as Relief Society President and with her husband in the Jordan River Temple. Leah Miner Shapiro passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2006.

She has left us to join her husband, Morris, and daughter, Sally, brothers, Carl and Orland, sisters, Valentine, Orpha, and DeOna. Leah was survived by a brother, Lewis Miner, sisters, Faye Loose, Elma Emery, Elaine Densley, Dorothy Malmgren, and more than 100 direct descendants including children Ronald Gary and Deborah Shapiro, Ann Stuart, Teresa and Bruce Talbot, Arlyn G. and Sheryl Shapiro, Gloria and Reed Bartlome, Bruce G. and Mischell Shapiro, S. Jack and Kathy Shapiro, David Morris and Holly Shapiro.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, February 13, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the Cannon First Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 934 West Fremont Avenue (1120 South) in the Glendale area of Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends and Family attended a Viewing at the Ward Chapel on Sunday, February 12, 2006 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM and one hour prior to the services on Monday.
Leah was laid to rest following the conclusion of the Funeral Services at the Lake Hills Memorial Park in Sandy, Utah beside her beloved husband.
