Inscription on stone: "Z. Z. Treembo. Died May 29, 1871 Aged 23Y 2M" *

Many thanks to Mary Parmele for photographing Zachariah's stone and posting his memorial to FAG. (2015 update, Mary's photo has been removed and her account seems to be inactive, the thanks stand.)

Thanks to cousins Reb and Alva for their contributions to Zachariah's story.

Zachariah is the great great grandfather of this contributor. (Carol)

The Trumbo family is lucky to have a number of letters that tell us about Zach's final days. Following is a part of a letter to Zach's father, Benjamin Trumbo. Letter was written by Dorothy Trumbo Hess, Benjamin's sister and Zach's aunt, with whom he was staying at the time of his death:

"Medok Jas Co., Mo. June 1, 1871. Dear Brother & family. I suppose you had the Sad news ere this time. Zach breathed his last Monday half past 4 o clock in the evening. he was taken with light chills about ten days before he died which weakened him very fast. with all the skillfull phisitions [physicians] that could be had there was none could save him. his disease was quick consumption. It shurely was the most stealing disase I ever Saw."

After searching for some time, Zach's obituary was finally located in the Rockingham Register, Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Virginia, Thursday June 15, 1871 (Thanks Alva). The obit reads as follows: "DIED at the residence of Rev. Levi Hess, in Jasper County, Mo, on the 29th of May, of quick consumption, Zachariah Z. Trumbo, son of Benjamin Trumbo, of Brock's Gap, Rockingham County, aged 23 years and 2 months."

Zachariah had one son, Charles Gratton Trumbo.

*We believe the stone mason misread the "U" or the "U" on his order sheet was written with loops at the top and was interpreted to read, "EE".
