OBITUARY
Sunday morning, January 14, 1912, Asa V. Southard, and old resident of the north side in this city met his death as the result of accidental poisoning drinking carbolic acid. He had not been feeling well having a severe cold, but was able to be up and go about is chores. He told his wife that he thought a dose of brandy sling might be good for him and proceeded to prepare it for himself. It had been some time since he had used any brandy and the cupboard in which the bottle stood had been turned around. This confused him as to its location and he took down instead the bottle containing carbolic acid. He used a teaspoonful and one half with hot water and sugar, his cold being so bad that he did not distinguish by smell or taste that it was not brandy till the family discovered the mistake. A physician was called and arrived in about 20 minutes, but he died before the doctor came.
Asa Varney Southard was born at St. Albans, now a part of Hartland, Somerset County, Maine, January 3, 1831, where he grew to manhood. He was married July 3, 1870, to Helen Townsend, who survives him.
He served in the Civil War. About twenty-eight years ago, they came to Neillsville, which has been their home ever since. He was a man of sterling honesty, trusted and liked by all who knew him; a kind husband and father and accommodating and helpful neighbor.
Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his death eight children; Mrs. May Rose of Neillsville, Mrs. Fred Elder of Butte, Montana; Warren, Herbert, William and John at home, Mrs. Delia Jennings, and George in the State of Washington. He also has a brother William who lives here and who is eighty years old and five half brothers, Charles, Warren, Daniel, Calvin and twelve grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 o'clock at the home. Rev. Prucia preaching the funeral sermon.
