James R. Waterson, 82, of 215 E. Main St., died early Monday after being involved in an auto accident Sunday evening.

Village police said they are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death. They said Mr. Waterson was involved in an accident at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, was admitted to the Edward John Noble Hospital complaining of a sore chest, and died at 5:40 a.m. Monday.

There will be no funeral service and no calling hours for Mr. Waterson.

Cremation was performed and the cremains placed at Riverside Cemetery, Wellesley Island.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the Frederick Bros. Funeral Home Inc., Theresa.

He is survived by a brother, Harold, Wellesley Island; two sisters, Muriel Maneu, Gouverneur, and Susan Liddle, Syracuse; and a niece, Susanna Palmer, Syracuse.

A sister, Bertha Paine, died before him.

Born on Wellesley Island on Jan. 15, 1911, son of John W. and Charlotte Slate Waterson, he graduated from Alexandria Bay High School in 1929 and attended Potsdam Normal School. He earned his master's degree and taught English in the Thousand Islands Central School District.

He joined the faculty at Gouverneur Junior High School in 1961, teaching seventh- and eighth-grade English, adult-education classes in literature and summer-school reading. In 1967, he was presented with a certificate of excellence at a meeting of the Student and Cooperating Teachers at the E.J. Noble Center at St. Lawrence University, Canton.

Mr. Waterson later taught at Mater Dei College in Ogdensburg, retiring in the mid-1980s.

He never married. He was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
