"Mr. Riter removed to Nauvoo, Illinois, in the spring of 1846, and lived in the city during the Mormon War and exodus from the city. He served as City Marshall for two terms and was deputy sheriff of Hancock County from 1854-56. He was a staunch Democrat and took an active part in local politics.
" He also served as Assessor of Appanoose Township for seventeen years. In 1892 he was stricken with paralysis, and while unable to help himself much, he cheerfully bore his burden until death came to give him his release. His photo shows he looks like his half-sister, Mary Ann Downing."
Charles Riter married Hannah Cosgrove in 1855. They had three children: Arthur, Benjamin, and Lizzie.
