Stella Gladys Kelley was born the daughter of William Henry Kelley and Nancy (Nannie) Evaline Dodd. She was born on July 30, 1895 in Izard County, Arkansas. Her family moved around quite a bit when she was young. The family left Arkansas sometime after she turned 5. By 1910 they were living in Williamson County, Texas which is a county away from the present day Austin, Texas. By 1915, her father, William Henry Kelley was sick with Tuberculosis. By the time he died in 1915, in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, their son, Shelby came down with it as well. The doctor advised Nannie Kelley to move her remaining family to New Mexico where the climate was drier.

Stella married Lee Pinkney Jones on November 19, 1919 and to this union were 4 children: Nancy Elizabeth, Anna Beatrice, Virginia May, and Shelby Lee. Shelby Lee, who was named after Stellas borther Shelby died in infancy. Consequently, Shelby Kelley, Stella's brother lost his battle with TB at the age of 21.

Stella died young herself. According to the New Mexico death index she died in Bernalillo County, on May 25, 1928. It is said that her tombstone has the date May 4, 1925 though I have never seen it. After the death of Stella, Lee moved with his surviving daughters and mother in law, Nannie Kelley back to Texas.
