Principal Chief of Southern Arapaho Indians. He was born in the 1840's somewhere in Western Oklahoma. Became Principal Chief in 1889. Along with Black Kettle, he fought sucessfully at the Battle of Sand Creek in 1864. He signed the Treaty of Medicine Lodge which moved the tribe to Oklahoma. Even though he was involved in the Ghost Dance Movement, a messianic movement which longed for the restoration of the past; a return to a life free of hunger, disease, and the bitter warring with the white people, he backed the notion to open the reservation to settlement. Close by the area of his burial, the springs bear his name.
