Maria Berktold was born in a small village in Bajot, Hungary to Joseph Berktold (proven) and possibly Carolina Tshuder (or Coder)(mother not proven). She married Valentin Peternell on 9 February 1874 in Leoben, Steirmark, Austra. Valentin was a miner who was from Leoben Austria. Maria and Valentin had a total of nine children, five of whom were still living in 1910. I am now not sure there were nine children. Pending research.

I grew up being told that Maria's husband died while she was pregnant with Edward, the ninth child. Circumstances were always hazy regarding his death, but it was presumed he died in a mining accident. Maria immigrated to the United States with her 17 year old son Edward. They left Rotterdam port on November 5, 1906 and arrived in New York at Ellis Island on November 13, 1906. Ship manifest states Maria was married and passage was paid by her husband.

As of April 5, 2015 I have discovered the baptism records for two of Maria's children, Joseph and my grandfather Edward. The record for Edward claims that Valentine Peternell is the father and there is nothing recorded in the ten year period surrounding Edward's birth indicating Valentine died. There is no notation in the baptism record that when Edward was born, his father had died. This brick wall is now coming down. It appears that while Maria and four of her children immigrated to the United States between 1903 and 1906, her husband Valentine stayed behind in Steirmark Austria with other children.

Maria is buried with her sons Anton and Joseph. There are also two other family members buried in this same plot. Maria's name was not inscribed on the headstone with Anton and Joseph. Son Joseph drowned in the Eastland tragedy in 1915.

Sister of Edward Berktold of Cicero, Illinois.
