The son of Jacob & Esther (Mogel) Blank, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Perry County August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 26, 1863.

He married Sarah Thompson and fathered William Elmer (b. 07/04/66), Emory Herbert (b. 07/07/68), Maude Estella (b. 10/11/76), Charlotte May (b. 11/01/81), Esther Gertrude (b. 09/13/83). After the war, he lived most of his life in Northumberland County but died in Harrisburg from "cardiac asthma with pulmonary congestion" with a "severe cold over chest - acute bronchitis" a contributing factor.

Both his death certificate and obituary use "Edward" as his first name, but his military records and his pension index all identify him as shown here. His grave is reportedly unmarked.
