Thomas Smart was born in Swanville, Maine. He enlisted as a Private in Co. I, 9th Maine Infantry, for a period of 3 years, on Sept 12, 1861. At time of enlistment, he resided in Bucksport, Maine, was a 23 year old farmer, married, with a light complexion, light hair, blue eyes and stood 5' 8 1/2" tall. He mustered in on Sept. 21, 1861. He re-enlisted Jan 1, 1864 and was honorably discharged Sept 2, 1865.
His first wife was Mary Elizabeth Smart. They were married Oct. 1861 and divorced Oct. 1879. She died on 21 July 1923.
He married his second wife, Nellie Logue, on 01 Sept. 1888.
At the time of his death, Thomas had lived in Deerfield for 12 years, having moved there from Manchester. He was aged 68 years, 2 months, and 15 days.
The grave stone has 1841 as his birth year, it is actually 1838.
