Daniel was the son of John Smart and Nancy West.

Daniel Smart was born in Swanville, Maine. He enlisted as a Private in Co. G, 21st Maine Infantry, for a period of 9 months, on Sept. 10, 1862 at Augusta, Maine. At time of enlistment, he resided in Frankfort, Maine, was a 38 year old farmer, married, with sandy complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair, and stood 5 ft. 8 1/2 in. tall. Mustered in on Oct. 14, 1862. Discharged April 4, 1863 for disability.

Daniel Smart's widow, Annis T. Smart, applied for a military pension after Daniel died. Her widow's declaration for pension stated that her husband died of consumption that he contracted after his enlistment. The army surgeon who examined Daniel stated it was because of disease of the urinary organs of an aggravated form - this disease commenced some years before enlistment. He was discharged April 4, 1863 to date Oct. 14, 1862, the date he mustered into Co. G. The pension was denied. Daniel's children filed a second claim later that was also denied.
