In 1868 Even with his wife and daughter started out for territory in northwest Minnesota that was Otter Tail County. Their home was a dugout shelter near Wall Lake and was made from sod. Rails were cut and put on top. Then the sod was laid on top of the rails. Later a log house was built. In those days there were Indians all around them. They were friendly Indians. When they would come calling Siri would bake a fresh loaf of bread and give them.
