James Riddick Baskerville, son of William and Susanna Riddick Jiggetts Baskerville, was born at Buena Vista Plantation in 1853. He left his Virginia home at 22 years-old to seek adventure in Austin, Texas. He fell ill while on the train and not long after he arrived and checked into a hotel, a doctor was summoned. He died Dec. 3, 1875 and is buried in Austin. William Baskerville would write his son John Gordon Baskerville in a letter dated Dec. 8, 1875 to tell him of his Riddick's untimely death. William went on to write "My heart is filled with anguish at the thought that my poor boy died far away from his friends..."

Several newspaper clippings found in the Baskerville Holy Bible tell of how Riddick was taken care of and given a funeral with a sermon delivered by Rev. J. G. Grasty at the Southern Presbyterian Church and a burial place was assured as requested by Governor Stockdale (Texas).
