Son of William Baskerville, Jr. and Susanna Riddick Jiggetts, Charles was born at the family plantation, Buena Vista in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Charles attended Hampden-Sydney College and left the college at the beginning of the Civil War.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 21, 1862 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, 1st Virginia Infantry. On September 10, 1864, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. At Appomattox on April 9, 1865, he was paroled.

Charles married Alice Merle Sampson, daughter of Dr. F. S. Sampson, at Hampden-Sydney College on August 23, 1865. They settled in Prince Edward county.

He was a merchant and also raised thoroughbred horses on his 30-acre farm. The farmhouse was built about 1870 by Charles and Alice. After living in the house for only six years, in June 1876 Charles sold it to Hampden-Sydney College. The house burned down in 1951.

Charles and Alice had 10 children, 6 girls and 4 boys.
