John was the son of James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton and Princess Joan of Scotland, Countess of Morton, the daughter of James I of Scotland and Lady Joan Beaufort.
John was the husband of Janet Crichton, the daughter of Patrick Crichton of Cranston-Riddel. They had four children:
* James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton d 1553.
* Richard Douglas, had two sons William and James
* Agnes Douglas, wife of Alexander Livingston, 5th Lord Livingston
* Elizabeth Douglas, wife to her second cousin Robert Keith, Master of Marischal
He was a shrewd businessman who fought to hold his lands well in court, later owning the Great Midlothian Coalfields. John became the second Earl of Morton in 1493 at his father's death, and was succeeded by his son James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton, who three daughters were affected by mental health and the title fell to one of his daughter's husbands.
