He appears in the 1910 Buchanan census as a hospital patient although his wife Henrietta applied for widow's benefits in 1908. It is not determined if she actually received any benefits prior to his actual death, which is presently unknown. She may not have even known where he was in 1908. Her obituary only mentions she was his widow. John Hottenstein of his military service does not appear in the 1890 Veterans Schedule. There are several stories in St. Joseph newspapers of a John R Hottenstein for arrests and vagrancy. He must have died as a pauper with no military honors, and possibly an unmarked grave.
If anyone challenges his burial here they need to prove another location. There is no record that he died in the community of his wife and family.
