LAD SMOTHERED
IN SAND PIT

Walter Ward, Twelve Year Old Son
of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ward
Buried in Sand Pit Sunday

Walter Ward, the twelve year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ward was found Sunday afternoon about four o'clock in the sand pit on the ten acre strip a short distance from their home. The lad was found by Mona Morton and a younger sister, Elva Ward, who come to the sand pit to play, probably only a few minutes after the slide occurred which buried Walter under its heavy load. As soon as the lad was discovered the alarm was given and neighbors rushed to the scene and quickly uncovered the boy, and an attempt was made to resusticate (sic) him but life was probably extinct probably (sic) close to an hour before he was found.
That afternoon about three o'clock a number of the neighbor boys came to the Ward home and wanted Walter to go with them to the school ground to play on the school apparatus, but Walter told them he would rather play in the sand having some tunnels already dug underneath and in which he had been having great fun. The boys went to the high school grounds and Walter to the sand pit. Shortly after he had gone Mona Morton and Elva Ward went over to the Sand Pit to play and one of the children had an old spoon with which they were digging in the sand and in this manner the hand of Walter was uncovered. The frightened children immediately told their parents and the neighbors rushed to the place. Mr. Ward had gone by the place about an hour previous and at the time of the discovery was on the east side of the river, and when the word stated that his boy was seriously injured he was certain it was the youngest girl for she was playing there when he passed the pit. The slide which buried the boy had probably occurred before Mr. Ward had passed the place.
Fully a ton of sand and earth covered the boy and life was crushed out and suffocation occurred almost immediately. The Ward home is just back of the Dr. Jackson residence and only a short distance from the Ward home is located the sand pit. The sand pit is located on what is known as the "ten acre strip" and for several years sand and gravel has been taken from the place. During the summer many children in the neighborhood have been playing in the clean sand there and of late, because of the dry condition, it has been easy to burrow under. The seriousness of the condition was not noticed until after the lad had lost his life.
Walter Melvin Ward was born at Marion, Ohio, June 13, 1912, and passed way at his home in Lehigh October 26, 1924, aged 12 years, 4 months, and 13 days. Besides his father and mother he leaves two sisters, Zola, aged 16 and Elva aged 7. The funeral held at the United Brethren church was largely attended the church being filled with sympathizing neighbors and friends.
Walter is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward, they having an older daughter and a younger one. The lad was a student in Mrs. Peel's room in our schools and his untimely death comes as a shock to the people of this communiey (sic). Funeral services were held from the United Brethren church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by the pastor, Rev. Heck, and interment was made in the West Lawn cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved parents and other relatives in their hour of sorrow.
