Article/obituary from Daily Leader , 7/30/1881:

Two Other Victims to the Insatiate Waters.

Philo and Otho Smith, Two Brothers, of South Des Moines, Drowned.
While Fishing in North River - Both Bodies {Recovered}

Word reached the city yesterday evening a few hours after we had gone to press, that two brothers residing in South Des Moines had been drowned in North river, southeast of the city, near the mouth of the stream. This morning the brother of the unfortunate men was in the city and relates the sad occurrence as follows: The brothers have been employed for some time in working on the farm of Mr. Hargus, southeast of the city and yesterday afternoon had gone fishing to North river. They were accompanied by a brother-in-law of Philo's, and at the time of the sad affair the two brothers were seining. They were in a bend of the stream and the water in places was quite deep, reaching in some localities ten feet. Philo was holding the edge of the seine next to the deep water and backed off toward it and suddenly fell over backwards where the water was beyond his depth. Otho immediately went to his rescue and also got into the deep water and sank. The brother-in-law plunged after the two and was caught by them in their frantic struggles to escape, his short torn from his body and he narrowly escaped with his life. The alarm was given, and with the aido of several living in the vicinity, the search for the bodies was commenced. The body of Otho was soon recovered. The remains of Philo was also discovered later and the sad cortage bore their remains to their home in South Des Moines where their grief stricken families were awaiting them. Philo is married and leaves a wife and one child. Otho when here, makes his home with an aged and widowed mother, whom he supports.

On all these the blow falls with peculiar sadaness, and the double death makes for all the relatives a sorrow almost too heavy for the human heart. The young men are highly spoken of by their neighbors as being industrious and exemplary, and all extend their heartfelt sympathy to the afflicted relatives. The double funeral took place this afternoon at two o'clock from their homes in South Des Moines, thus completing the last sad chapter in this sad accident. It almost seems that Des Moines is fated in drowning as this makes the ninth victim whose drowning we have been called upon to chronicle this summer.
