Son of Thomas H and Margaret (Chestnut) McDill. He came to the U.S. from Ireland in 1772 and settled in Chester County, South Carolina. His wife was Isabella McQuiston. They married January 17, 1788 and moved to Israel Township, Preble County, Ohio in 1806. Their children were Thomas, David, Margaret, Hugh, John, Archibald, Elizabeth and Samuel. David served as a Revolutionary War soldier in 1781 and 1782 in Captain Adams Company, Colonel Lacey's regiment.
