Donald served as a Shipfitter, Third Class, USS Hornet (CV-8), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Rutland County, Vermont prior to the war.

Donald was declared "Missing In Action" when the Hornet was attacked by a coordinated Japanese dive bomber and torpedo plane attack and eventually sank. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
