TO THE MEMORY OF HENRY HESS
Henry Hess was born in Berlin, Germany, May 3rd, 1847, and died in Girard, Monday, September 14th, 1914, aged 67 years, 4 months, and 11 days. At the age of 21 years he came to America and located at Coal Camp, Mo. Two years later he came to Kansas and homesteaded near Brazilton. Four years ago he left the farm and moved to Hepler and two years later to Girard. His first wife died 16 years ago and about four years ago he was married again. He was one of the old settlers here, having lived in the County forty-four years. He was one of our best citizens and one of our best farmers. The life that he lived is worthy of emulation, and his memory will be cherished as the years multiply. The funeral services were held at Brazilton, Friday afternoon, conducted by Elder Wilson, pastor of the Chrtsian [sic] Church at Hepler of which church he was a member. His remains were buried in the Spangler cemetery, south of Brazilton, by the side of his first wife. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Mrs. Angie Hess, and four sons, Ed. Hess, Walnut, Kansas; Herbert Hess, Alamosia [sic], Colorado; David and Guy Hess, Salida, Colorado; Mrs. C. H. Ryan and Mrs. Clarence Ryan, Brazilton, Kansas, Mrs. Ed Varble, Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Mrs. I. Nixon, Pittsburg, Kansas; Miss Katie Hess, Brazilton, Kansas and Mrs. Henry Thonhoff, Salida, Colorado.
