Place of birth is given in the 1875 New York State census as USA, NY, Niagara County. In all other censuses in which Matilda has been found, it is given as Canada. The date and place of birth shown here are from A Genealogical History of Henry Adams, of Braintree, Mass., and His Descendants; Also John Adams, of Cambridge, Mass., 1632-1897, Andrew W Adams, The Tuttle Company, Printers, Rutland, VT, 1898, Vol I, page 440.

Although the date of death on Matilda's marker is 1893, both Greenwood Cemetery records and the New York Death Index, 1880-1956, indicate that she died in 1903. Cemetery records indicate that she was 70 years old at the time of her death, which is consistent with a date of death of 1903. Cemetery records further indicate that she was buried on 28 Sep 1903. The New York Death Index shows her date of death as 28 Sep 1903, and place of death as USA, NY, Niagara, Wilson. In the Index, her death is recorded in the list for 1903. In addition, this date is found in A Genealogical History of Henry Adams, page 440.

Matilda and Thomas are shown in the 1892 New York State census, living in USA, NY, Niagara, Wilson, with two of their children. Neither Matilda nor Thomas has been positively identified in the 1900 US census.

There is a Thomas McQuillan/McQuillin, of about the same age, shown in the 1894 Michigan State census, living in USA, MI, Bay, Bay City, with two daughters, Mary and Nellie. Although this Thomas pulls up in searches for Thomas of Wilson, NY, they are not the same person. Thomas of Wilson did not have a daughter Mary; and Thomas of Bay City was married to Ellen Coffee or Coffer, according to the Michigan death certificate for their daughter, Mary (McQuillan) Van Poplin.

Matilda's date of death shown here is the one given in the New York Death Index. However, please be aware that there is a possibility that she died in 1893.

If you have information about Matilda's date of death, please contact the manager of this memorial. Thank you!

Matilda was the daughter of Dudley Gilman and Sarah "Sally" (Green) Adams. Please see the memorial for her brother, James Gilbert Adams, for a discussion of Dudley and Sarah.
