Greenwood Cemetery is located partly in the Village of Wilson and partly in the Town of Wilson, Niagara County, New York. It is on the west side of Harbor Street (Route 18), approximately 1/4 mile south of Lake Ontario and on the west edge of the Village of Wilson. The main entrance, with arch, is located off Harbor Street a few yards north of Pettit Street. A second entrance is located off Park Street, which is further north on Harbor Street. The Park Street entrance is located beside the Greenwood Veterans Memorial Park. The Veterans Park is sponsored by American Legion Post No. 836, Wilson, NY, and honors people associated with Wilson who served in the military in all eras, some of whom are buried in Greenwood. There is a parking area at the Veterans Park entrance, and parking is possible along most of the lanes through the cemetery.

The original land for Greenwood was donated to the Greenwood Cemetery Association in 1851 by Luther Wilson, a son of Reuben Wilson, the family after which the Town and Village of Wilson are named. The initial cemetery was approximately 7 acres, and included Sections A, B, C, and D. The cemetery was later enlarged by purchase and Sections E, F, R, S, and T were added. Sections C and D sit beside and above a creek, and their edges may be unstable.

There are no known remaining records for Greenwood Cemetery prior to 1891. This includes a time period during which an older cemetery in the Town was closed and the people buried there were re-located to Greenwood. Because of the lack of records, markers are the only evidence of burial in Greenwood prior to 1891. Knowing that the marker evidence was disappearing, two local ladies, Shirley S. and Betty K., read all of the remaining markers in Sections A, B, C, and D between 1985 and 1990. To the best of present knowledge, theirs is the only reading that was done in Greenwood. The visible markers were completely photographed in 2015. It is undoubtedly the case that more people have been buried in Greenwood than are now known.

The Town of Wilson became responsible for Greenwood Cemetery with the demise of the Cemetery Association. Greenwood is presently maintained by the Town and is active.
