Son of William F. and Anna L. McDonnell Mahan

U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Commissioned a 2nd lieutenant, joining the 23rd Marine regiment at Camp Lejune, N.C., in December, 1942. Landed in the first wave at Roi Island in the Marshalls, Saipan in the Marianas, and Iwo Jima. Received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in Saipan, and a Bronze Star for wounds sustained at Iwo Jima. Released from the service in 1952, rank of Major in the Marine Corps Reserve.
